Our story

At the roots of our decades-long history is a philosophy of hard work and dependability. Our reputation supports our ability to attract loyal customers, employees and partners. And we don’t take it for granted. “We are family…” sharing a united vision and set of core values “…when committed people work together, greatness is achieved.”

As we enter our 21st year, we will continue to improve upon existing manufacturing techniques and integrate new technologies with the goal of creating better products.

Larry Prewitt left Eaton in 1984 and established a small consulting business, but due to travel and being away from family, assumed roles such as Financial Manager and Controller for Climate Control, Snyder General, Lenox and other businesses.

1984

1988

Larry and another principal partner purchased the assets of a bankrupt company and started HMF Express. Larry and his partner sold that company in 1999.

2002

Larry and Ellen Prewitt purchased the current 116,000 sq. ft. facility at 150 Division Drive for the purpose of fabricating commercial metal products for the building industry- initially small commercial metal buildings. Bill Dries was the first employee of this new company (Metal Cad Steel Framing, Inc.) As the business plan developed, the strategy changed to be more focused on Larry’s previous experience of Custom Metal Doors and Frames for commercial applications.

Larry’s experience started with Eaton Corporation, a fortune 100 company, where he was hired as an intern after completing his college requirements. Larry held various financial and accounting positions while employed by Eaton and was placed on several teams for developing improved profitability for the Yale Equipment Division.

2003

With the addition of Steve Webb, Mark Velthoven and other key shop employees, Larry and Ellen decided to test the waters and Custom Metal Products (a DBA of Metal Cad Steel Framing Systems) was formed. Over the years, our growth can be directly attributed to the ingenuity and persistence of these people along with their belief in offering quality products and quality service.

In May of 2003, the first order was taken. As our customer volume grew, an overhead conveyor and paint line was installed and then two S4 CNC punching lines.

2013

We added our first automated laser with steel storage tower, followed by a second in 2017.

2021

Our door line was strengthened with the addition of a new RAS over/under bender.

2024

We added a Salvagnini P2 panel bender, which will allow us to streamline our process and keep lead times down.
